About the Society

“I desire mercy, not sacrifice” — Matthew 9:13

St. George’s Orthodox Society in Jaffa was founded in 1896. It is among the earliest Orthodox societies in the city. It established a clinic with doctors to treat the needy of all communities without exception.

The Society’s core aims

  1. Caring for the sick.
  2. Care for the burial of the dead.

The Society covered funeral and burial expenses for needy members of the community, and helped administer the affairs of St. George’s Orthodox Church “Al-Khader”.

The Society’s journey

In early 1930 the Society began building shops next to St. George’s Church to strengthen financial stability and not rely solely on the charity of community members.

After the Nakba and the displacement of most of the community, the Society came under the wing of the Orthodox Philanthropic Society in order to preserve its existence and continue its aims.
